The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) has endorsed the World Health Organization’s (WHO) PBM Guidance describing it as – ‘a practical phased approach to tackling anaemia and improving patient outcomes, especially in resource-limited settings.’
In March 2025, WHO released “Guidance on Implementing Patient Blood Management (PBM) to Improve Global Blood Health Status”. This landmark document offers an actionable roadmap for implementing PBM as a national standard of care and represents a milestone in the global health agenda. A global, multidisciplinary panel—coordinated by WHO’s External Steering Committee—developed the guidance using real-world data, clinical and economic evidence, and broad stakeholder input to ensure relevance, especially in resource-limited settings.
