30 October, 2026, Perth Australia – The International Foundation for Patient Blood Management (IFPBM) congratulates IFPBM Associate Dr Kevin Trentino on being awarded a 2026 RPH Research Foundation Career Advancement Fellowship.
Dr Trentino is one of four 2026 Fellows. The program supports early- to mid-career researchers connected to East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS), providing protected research time, salary support and direct research costs.
Dr Trentino leads research and evaluation at East CareConnect, part of East Metropolitan Health Service, and holds adjunct academic appointments at the University of Western Australia and Curtin University. His research focuses on putting data and digital technologies to work at the bedside, spanning transfusion medicine, predictive analytics and health services research. Dr Trentino is also a member of the World Health Organization’s expert working group on Patient Blood Management.
Through the Fellowship, Dr Trentino will lead research using continuous physiological monitoring to better understand how patients respond to red blood cell transfusion. The project will build on East CareConnect’s existing unique continuous remote monitoring capability and incorporate additional non-invasive measures of haemodynamics and tissue oxygenation to examine physiological changes before, during and after transfusion.
Transfusion decisions currently rely heavily on haemoglobin measurements and intermittent clinical assessment, providing only snapshots of a patient’s physiological state. The research aims to determine whether continuous physiological data can provide new insights that could ultimately support more individualised transfusion decision-making.
Dr Trentino’s longer-term goal is to translate these findings into clinical tools that support better patient outcomes, appropriate use of blood products and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
“We are delighted that Dr Trentino’s work will be supported by the RPH Research Foundation Career Advancement Fellowship. Kevin is a valued Associate Member of IFPBM, and this research has the potential to make an important contribution to the evidence supporting patient blood management” said Prof. Axel Hofmann, IFPBM Director.
