The International Foundation for Patient Blood Management (IFPBM) congratulates the global PBM nursing community on a landmark milestone: the American Nurses Association (ANA) has granted formal recognition to Patient Blood Management (PBM) as a distinct nursing specialty — the first recognition of its kind in the history of the field.
This achievement is anchored in the PBM Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, a foundational document developed by a dedicated volunteer workgroup of PBM nurses through the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM), which now serves as the overarching professional association for PBM nursing.
This recognition establishes formal specialty status within the nursing profession, provides PBM nurses with a published professional framework, and creates a pathway toward PBM nursing certification, currently in development. It is a testament to the expertise and dedication of PBM nurses everywhere — and to the volunteer workgroup who built this foundation from the ground up.
