Professor Isbister was an undergraduate at the University of NSW and did postgraduate training at St Vincent’s Hospital and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London. His main career has been at Royal North Shore Hospital as Head of the Department of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine being appointed Consultant Emeritus in 2004.
He has conjoint professorial appointments at several universities and continues to serve on National and International Advisory Committees. He is currently chair of the massive transfusion registry at Monash University and chair of the National Blood Authority PBM steering committee. Prof Isbister has had a broad range of clinical, research and teaching interests in haematology, transfusion medicine and patient blood management and has received acknowledgement with several National and International awards. He was one of the early advocates for moving blood transfusion from a product focus to a patient focus and differentiating patient blood management from donor blood management.
